Speed Dating at the Library

North High Language Arts instructor Emily Schneider required her students to complete a round of speed dating at the library – WITH THE BOOKS!

Speed_book_dating_150As part of their Language Arts coursework, the high school juniors met at the library, where they were greeted by red tablecloths, roses in bud vases, and flickering candlelight. Library Media Specialist Karee Bednar had selected a variety of books to display, and Schneider’s students spent a quick five minutes at each table “getting to know” each book, and hopefully finding a “compatible” book to “date” for the next few weeks.

The students made notations on their technology devices as to why or why not they selected books as part of the “speed dating” activities. If a student was unable to find the perfect book to date, Bednar had also prepared a table of paper covered books, where students could not see the title of the book they were selecting – much like being unfamiliar with a “blind date” set up by well-meaning friends or family members.

Schneider got the idea for the activity in article from a Library Media Connection Journal.  Book selection seems to be a difficult task for many students. “Students have commented that they never know what to look for when coming to the library. Usually they don’t have very much time to select a book, so they go back to familiar authors and series books.  They said this gave them the opportunity to explore genres and authors they didn’t know much about,” said Bednar.

Maybe speed (book) dating will be offered soon at a library near you!
